"A dark, suspenseful crime fiction novel that grabbed my attention and didn’t let go."
Dead Blood City is a dark, suspenseful crime fiction novel that grabbed my attention and didn’t let go.
Firstly, I enjoyed how atmospheric this book was. In the beginning, I thought the story would be just a regular crime fiction novel, where the main character has a unique ability (like the TV series “Medium”). However, the author adds much more as we get glimpses of vampires and the underworld through Saoirse’s dreams. The author makes the story suspenseful, as Saoirse receives visions of the past that gives her clues to Delaney Bascom’s investigation. I loved how dark and sinister the book is, where you have no idea what will happen because of Saoirse’s strange visions. The visions are horrific, raw, and intense as we see Saoirse’s life in danger from supernatural forces. These scenes were the highlight of the book for me.
I also loved Saoirse as the lead. From the beginning, I felt Saoirse was enigmatic and mysterious as she comes out of Somerled’s therapy session, and we learn of her Uncle Liam and her powers. Saoirse struggles with her feelings, how to deal with her abilities, and has the urge to run and fight, but she has to control herself. I also liked how the author gives us a glimpse of Saoirse’s past as we see her moments with her mother and her siblings, Maureen and Finn. Even characters like Somerled gave me chills and turned out to be complex.
There were many notable moments to the tale: when Saoirse sees Mrs. Bascom and what she experiences with Bastian in the club or when Alderisi attacks her. There are also some shocking twists that I did not expect.
Overall, Dead Blood City is a great book, which I hope turns into a series!
