Jo Denning, Author of HUSH HUSH CITY
Hush Hush City sounds like a wonderful dark urban fantasy romance. When you wrote The End, was it emotional for you?
The Saoirse Reilly series will have eight books total so it hasn’t felt done to me even when I finish a book. I’ll let you know in another six installments, I guess!
What did you do to celebrate its release?
Oh, gosh. I don’t really do anything to celebrate the release of my books. Am I supposed to? I celebrate by writing the next book! Installment three is Black Sight City, so named because it will be the darkest installment yet. This will be a major turning point for the series. For those wanting (demanding) more about Reilly’s heritage and the mysterious world we’ve only seen in flashbacks, this is the book for you! But be careful what you wish for. It is always darkest before dawn.
Can you tell us a little about your main characters?
All of the characters in Hush Hush City and the Saoirse Reilly series are very important to me. They tell the story, I’m just writing it. Alderisi and Somerled are the fan favs with their big personalities and complex stories. They are definitely scene-stealers! I enjoy writing them but I’ll let my reviewers sing their praises. I’m going to focus on my favorites!
Saoirse Reilly is the protagonist, a Boston police detective with psychic abilities. She has been a love her or hate her kind of character for readers and that is intentional. She has taken a lot of hits throughout her life. As a result, she is a bit of a mess right now. But I believe in her. Other favs of mine are her partner, Bastian Perez, a loyal youngest son with excellent social skills and a sweet ride. Unlike Reilly, all my readers love Bastian. Delaney Bascom is my personal hero, a fourteen-year-old Autistic girl who seems to know everything. Reilly saves her from monsters in Dead Blood City, but there will come a time when Delaney returns the favor. Her ‘uncle’ is Aiden Ward, an idealistic ADA who sees glimmers of the future.
Did you base any of your characters on real life people?
Yes, most of them are based on relatives, past coworkers, and past clients. (I’m a clinical social worker and behavioral health therapist by day.) Special callout to the guy who inspired Somerled’s usage of everyone’s first names paired with unsettling eye contact. Our fellow coworkers at the psych hospital called it his power move.
What would you like our readers to come away with after reading your book?
Be open and honest even though it’s terrifying. Secrets give others power over you. If you come out and say it, whatever it is, you take back your control.
